Michigan MCCA Refund Information

At AAA, we look forward to working with the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA) to issue refunds to our auto insurance policyholders.

On December 13, 2021, the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) announced that policyholders with vehicles insured under a Michigan auto policy that met the minimum insurance requirements for operating on Michigan roads as of 11:59pm on October 31, 2021, will receive a MCCA refund of $400 per eligible vehicle and $80 per eligible historic/antique vehicle.

We will issue these refunds to our eligible Michigan policyholders. To reduce the complexity of issuing and tracking refunds, AAA will only issue these refunds by check.

MCCA refunds are made possible because of reforms to Michigan’s auto no-fault system passed with bipartisan support in 2019, and sound financial returns on investments made by the MCCA. And now, these reforms are putting money back in the pockets of our customers and drivers across the state.

Who is eligible?

To receive a refund, all vehicles must be insured as of 11:59 p.m. on October 31, 2021, and covered by a policy that meets the minimum insurance requirements for operating a vehicle on Michigan roads.

How much will my refund be?

The MCCA has announced that the refund will be $400 per eligible car or motorcycle. For example, if you had auto insurance policies for two cars as of 11:59 p.m. on October 31, 2021, you will receive a refund of $800. The refund is $80 per historical vehicle. The MCCA Refund Payments portal provides estimated MCCA Refund information for AAA auto insurance policyholders. If you have multiple policies, you will receive one check per policy and can look them up individually.

When and how will I get my refund?

MCCA Refund checks will be mailed to eligible AAA policyholders beginning April 8, 2022. All refunds will be issued as checks. The MCCA Refund Payments portal provides estimated MCCA Refund check mail dates for AAA auto insurance policyholders. If you have multiple policies, you will receive one check per policy and can look them up individually.

Do I need to do anything to check if I’m eligible?

No. If you are eligible to receive a refund, it will be sent to you by your insurance company and you will not have to do anything to receive it.

Are motorcycles and RVs eligible for the refund?

Yes. Motorcycles and RVs are eligible for the $400 refund if the motorcycle or RV was covered by a policy that meets the minimum insurance requirements for operating on Michigan roads.

Are trailers eligible for the refund?

No. Trailers are not subject to the MCCA assessment and therefore are not eligible for the refund.

If I don't have unlimited Personal Injury Protection (PIP) medical coverage, will I still get a refund?

Yes. All qualified vehicles are eligible to receive a refund regardless of the PIP medical coverage level chosen on the policy.

If I have a car or motorcycle that is registered and insured as a historic vehicle, does it qualify for a refund?

Historic vehicles are only charged 20% of the annual MCCA assessment due to their limited allowable use. Therefore, drivers will receive a refund of $80 for each historic vehicle they had insured as of 11:59 p.m. on October 31, 2021.

I owe a balance to my insurance company. Can my insurer use the refund toward my balance owed?

No. Insurance companies must issue the refund to policyholders in the form of a check or ACH transfer.*

I've moved since October 31, 2021, how willI get my refund?

Your insurance company will send your refund via check or ACH deposit* to the address or bank account it has on record. To prevent delays in getting your refund if you have moved, please contact your insurance company to ensure it has your current information.
