How to Drive Online

Learn from the leader in driver education. How to Drive Online is AAA’s comprehensive driver education course for new drivers that is both fun and educational. Built on AAA’s decades of respected driver education expertise.

Approved in the state of Wisconsin for novice driver classroom education, this 30-hour online program aims to ensure that safe driving habits are developed and maintained for life. Students may only complete two hours maximum per day. The course must be completed within six months of purchase.

After completing the online course, teens may begin their driving lessons (purchased separately). AAA offers behind-the-wheel lessons in the Madison area. If you’re outside of the Madison area, please visit our Approved Driving School Network page, information below.

A network of approved driving schools which meet AAA’s quality standards and criteria that ensure new drivers get the best training available. 

In-person Classroom and Behind-the-Wheel Package

The first step in your teen getting their license! This package includes both the classroom and behind-the-wheel education. The course consists of 30 hours of classroom using our How to Drive curriculum. How to Drive is nationally recognized for its skillful integration of classroom instruction with behind-the-wheel training. For the behind-the-wheel portion, you may choose between two options:

  • Basic — Six hours of on-road instruction and six hours of observations
  • Premium — Eight hours of on-road instruction and two  hours of observations

If the parent/guardian is a AAA member, upon successful course completion, your teen receives a complimentary one-year AAA Associate Membership.

Please select a course carefully, one without conflicts in your teen’s schedule. Per Wisconsin state law, students may only miss class due to unforeseen circumstances; any missed classes must be made-up.

Behind-the-Wheel Lessons

AAA Driver Training offers driving lessons to teen drivers that have completed their classroom education at a different driving school or for adult drivers that need additional training behind-the-wheel. This service is limited to the Madison area.

Teen Package Pricing – all meet state of Wisconsin requirements, choose between:

6x6 – 6 hours of driving and 6 hours of observation = $315 or $345 (AAA Member/non-member)

8x2 – 8 hours of driving and 2 hours of observation = $420 or $460  (AAA Member/non-member)

9x0 – 9 hours of driving and 0 hours of observation = $475 or $520  (AAA Member/non-member)

Adult Lessons Pricing:                               

One hour - $55 or $60  (AAA Member/non-member)

Two hours - $105 or $110  (AAA Member/non-member)

StartSmart is an online webinar for parents of teens who are – or soon will be learning to drive. This two-hour online course prepares parents to navigate their teen’s learning-to-drive experience. This course demonstrates how to reinforce what your teen is learning in driver education and how to maximize the practice driving that you’ll do with them. AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety research is highlighted throughout this course.
